Banbury developed in the Anglo-Saxon period who built on the west bank of the River Cherwell around the 8^th century. Located on the edge of the Cotswolds, 64 miles northwest of London and 22 miles north of Oxford.

Banbury is well known for the children’s nursery rhyme ‘Ride a Cock Horse.’ The fine lady mentioned in the rhyme could have been Queen Elizabeth I, the Lady Godiva, who was wife of Leofric of Coventry or Celia Fiennes who’s brother was the 3^rd Viscount Saye and Sele of Broughton Castle, although it was more likely that it was a local girl who rode a horse through the city as part of the May Day processional celebrations each year. Banbury Cross, located in the centre of the market town with a statue of the fine lady on her horse, although the original cross itself was removed in 1600.

Market days in Banbury are on a Thursday and Saturday and there are many coffee shops to sample the famous Banbury Cakes.
